The Visit

I'm revisiting some older family photos and painting some . This is my grandmother walking up to the door during a holiday gathering. She loved being photographed or maybe she just tolerated me taking the photos.

Another Cloud Study plein air

Usually on a Friday after work I will sit outside and paint the sky. Its just me and the clouds. A great way to start the weekend.

The Children

This painting was inspired by a photo of African children in a shanty town. A coworker traveled to Africa with her church and shared the photo with me..

Platform Redux

I went back in and defined the forms more to make the image less sketchy. The vantage point is the top stairs leading down to the trains.

Available

I worked on this little study during my shifts at the gallery this past weekend. I paint while standing there and it does make it easier to problem solve. The lighting is also better. Berkeley Pier in Berkeley CA. My shapes don't read yet but of course that is the purpose of the study.

Abstract Pier

I limited my focus in this one. I first approached it as an abstract image. Second I wanted to make it readable as a dock scene. I also worked on site for about 3 hours. I think I will next work with the study done on site as my "photograph".

Along the Pier

An interesting man strolling along the seawall. This is the initial watercolor study. Pastels come to mind with this one. The tilt of his shoulders and the fact that he wore two different colored gloves attracted me to him.

Reluctant

I'm working on this image in pastel. This is a mid painting study that I did in watercolor. I was trying to understand the eyes and shape of her face. This little one was at one of our gallery openings and of course hanging onto daddy.

From The Pier 4

I got lost painting this little one but I still liked the results. When painting the ocean surface paintings I have to pay attention to the flow of the surf. I got lost and improvised.
